2007 ARLIS/NA Conference Travel Awards Announced

The Travel Awards Committee announces the recipients of the travel awards to attend the 35th annual conference in Atlanta.

The Conference Attendance Awards go to Laura Schwartz, University of Texas at Austin, and Elizabeth Berenz, Roger Williams University.

The Andrew Cahan Photography Award recipient is Karen Rinaldo, Princeton University.

The AskART Conference Attendance Award winner is Christine Hennessey, Smithsonian American Art Museum; the Student Diversity Award for Conference Attendance winner is Tang Li, University of Maryland; and the Judith A. Hoffberg Student Award for Conference Attendance recipient is Sarah Carter, Indiana University.

The Howard and Beverly Joy Karno Awards go to Christine Sala and Paula Gabbard, both from Columbia University.

The Puvill Libros Award recipients are Anna Maria Poma-Swank, PoloMuseale Fiorentino, and Michel Nijhoff, Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam.

2007 ARLIS/NA Research Awards Announced

The Worldwide Books Award for Publications goes to Martin Aurand, librarian and archivist, School of Architecture, Carnegie Mellon University, for his book, The Spectator and the Topographical City, published by the University of Pittsburgh Press in 2006.

The Worldwide Books Award for Electronic Resources is shared this year between Jeanne Brown, head, University of Nevada, Las Vegas Architecture Studies Library, for her resource, "Las Vegas Architects and Buildings Database" and Susan Craig, head librarian, Murphy Art and Architecture Library, University of Kansas, for her work, "Biographical Dictionary of Kansas Artists (active before 1945)."

Should Art Documentation be Peer-Reviewed?

In March of 2007, the ARLIS/NA Publications Committee invited all Society members to participate in a brief survey on the topic of peer review, with particular regard to the journal Art Documentation. Analysis of the responses is now underway and recommendations are forthcoming. Supporting this survey were two documents that informed Socity members about the issues surrounding peer review and Art Documentation. Rebecca Price's study on peer review and Art Documentation co-editor Judy Dyki's list of selected journals and their peer-reviewed status remain accessible in the Society's Online Publications section.

27 March 2007:
Feedback Needed on the Assessment Task Force Report and Recommendations!

The Assessment Task Force report including recommendations for restructuring ARLIS/NA is now available in the Members' Area of the Web site under "ARLIS/NA Organizational Assessment." The task force encourages all ARLIS/NA members to read the report and make your opinions heard. A blog has been set up for you to provide your comments about the report. You can add comments by selecting "What are your thoughts?". Annonymous comments can be made by skipping the name, mail, and website boxes. If you want to start a new thread/topic, you will have to register first. To register, select "Register" under "Meta."

23 March 2007:
Survey on ARLIS/NA and Visual Resources Association (VRA) Collaboration

The ARLIS/NA-VRA Joint Task Force on Collaboration seeks input from members of both organizations about collaborative opportunities and challenges. Complete the survey to contribute your creative thoughts and opinions on this topic. Discussions with the task force will also be scheduled at the ARLIS/NA and VRA conferences. The session at the ARLIS/NA conference will be held on Saturday, April 28, 5:00-6:30 p.m., in the Highlands Room, Sheraton Colony Square Hotel. The discussion at the VRA conference will be held on Tuesday, March 27, 5:30-6:30 p.m., in the Conference Suite 141, at the Intercontinental Kansas City at the Plaza.

The ARLIS/NA Publications Committee invites all Society members to participate in a brief survey on the topic of peer review, with particular regard to the journal Art Documentation. Your responses will help determine if this approach would be appropriate for this publication; your opinions will also assist the editors in their continuing efforts to present timely, relevant, and well-written articles to the journal's pages.

Before responding to the questions, we encourage you to read committee member Rebecca Price's study on peer review and Art Documentation co-editor Judy Dyki's list of selected journals and their peer-reviewed status.

12 January 2007:
ARLIS/NA Nominating Committee Announces New 2007 Executive Board Members

The ARLIS/NA Nominating Committee has announced that the candidates presented to the Society have been approved by acclamation. Kenneth Soehner, Rebecca Price, Amy Trendler, Cate Cooney, and Elizabeth Schaub will join the ARLIS/NA Executive Board in 2007. They will begin their terms at the Membership Meeting at the annual conference in Atlanta as Vice-President/President Elect, Secretary, Midwest Regional Representative, Northeast Regional Representative, and South Regional Representative respectively.

6 November 2006:
Committee seeks submissions to the George Wittenborn Memorial Book Award competition

The ARLIS/NA George Wittenborn Memorial Book Award Committee requests submissions of notable art books to its George Wittenborn Memorial Book Award competition. The award is presented annually to publications demonstrating excellence in art publishing. Books, exhibition catalogues, and new periodical titles in any language, published in 2006 and originating from a North American publisher will be considered. Specific criteria used for selection can be found in the Selection Guidelines.

Announcement of the awards will take place in April 2007. The awards will be presented during the opening convocation of the ARLIS/NA Annual Conference in Atlanta, Georgia. Award winning titles and individuals associated with them can expect to receive wide recognition in newspapers and journals of the library and publishing professions via press release announcements by ARLIS/NA.

5 October 2006:
Recent Publication

Sara Jean MacDonald, public services librarian and archivist at The University of the Arts has co-authored, with Eugene A. Bolt, Jr., the first book ever published on the history of the University. The University of the Arts was released in August, 2006, by Arcadia Publishing.

26 July 2006:
Member Mari Russell Receives Scholarship to Attend ACRL/Harvard Leadership Institute

Mari Russell, Ph.D., director of library programs at the Institute of American Indian Arts, has been selected to receive one of two Association of College & Research Libraries (ACRL) scholarships to attend the 2006 ACRL/Harvard Leadership Institute for Academic Librarians. The institute will be held on the campus of Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, August 6-12. The purpose of the scholarships is to support the participation of academic and research library leaders from Historically Black Colleges and Universities or those employed at Tribal Colleges and Universities. The institute is limited to 100 attendees.

Art Documentation Article by ARLIS/NA Member Dorothy Tao Receives Honors

"Bibliographic Instruction for a Diverse Population: Understanding, Planning, and Teaching in the Twenty-First Century" by Dorothy Tao has been selected as one of the Top 20 Library Instruction articles of 2005 by the American Library Association Library Instruction Round Table (LIRT). Dorothy's article appeared in the volume 24, number 1, spring 2005, issue of Art Documentation. The article was reviewed by the Top 20 Committee of LIRT and selected from all the library instruction articles published in 2005. A citation for the article will be included in the annual "Top 20" list published by LIRT, which is an important resource for instruction librarians in all disciplines.

Congratulations to Dorothy for this honor and to the Art Documentation editorial team--Judy Dyki, Kathy Zimon, and Eileen Markson--for supporting publication of such high-quality work.

5 April 2006:
Hillwood Library Awarded IPAM Grant

Hillwood Museum & Gardens has been awarded an International Partnership Among Museums (IPAM) grant that will be used to create a Web-exhibition on the traditions of imperial Russian illustrated art books and journals. Hillwood's art librarian Kristen Regina is partnering with Olga Kudryavtseva, senior art researcher of The State Russian Museum Art Library in St. Petersburg, Russia, to conduct research for the exhibition and a corresponding brochure. The grant will fund six weeks of travel for each librarian to do research at the other's institution. For inquiries regarding the IPAM grant and Hillwood's Library, contact Kristen Regina.

15 March 2006:
ARLIS/NA and VRA Annouce SEI Long-Term Planning Task Force

ARLIS/NA and the Visual Resources Association (VRA) announce the appointment of a joint Summer Educational Institute (SEI) Long-Term Planning Task Force. The task force will be co-chaired by Eileen Fry, University of Indiana, and Amy Lucker, Harvard University. Other task force members are Hemalata Iyer, SUNY Albany; Trudy Jacoby, Princeton University; Jeanne Keefe, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute; and Martha Mahard, Simmons College. The task force is charged with establishing a five-year strategic plan to develop the pedagogical goals for the SEI and exploring the long-term management, direction, and structure of the SEI. The SEI Long-Term Planning Task Force will report to the boards of ARLIS/NA and VRA and will meet for the first time at the ARLIS/NA conference in Banff in May 2006. A final task force report with recommendations will be submitted to the boards of both organizations in March 2007.

13 February 2006:
ARLIS/NA Compensation Survey Available Online

A new ARLIS/NA online publication, ARLIS/NA 2004 Art/Architecture Librarians and Visual Resource Professionals Compensation Survey is now available on the Society's Web site. Compiled by Kathrin Dodds and Heather Ball, the survey promises to be a timely and valuable management and resource tool. The document is the result of an exhaustive survey and includes statistical analysis that, for the first time, provides an accurate representation of current pay levels for art, architecture, and visual resource professionals in the United States and Canada. 7 February 2006:
Mary Kandiuk Receives Canadian Association of University Teachers (CAUT) Award

Mary Kandiuk, ARLIS/NA member and Visual Arts, Design & Theatre Librarian at York University Libraries, has been awarded the sixth Canadian Association of University Teachers' Academic Librarians' Distinguished Service Award. Kandiuk received the award for her outstanding service in furthering the status and working conditions of academic librarians and for her leadership skills. She was nominated by colleagues who said her work had influenced their advancement and participation as academic librarians. An announcement of the award and a photograph of Kandiuk receiving the award are included in the CAUT January 2006 Online Bulletin.

12 January 2006:
Digital Image Database Standards Checklist Available

The Standards Committee has announced the availability of the Digital Image Database Standards Checklist that may be used freely as a guide to evaluate digital image databases, presentations systems, or image repositories. The checklist was created by a subcommittee that includes Don Juedes, Deborah Boudewyns, Carole Ann Fabian, Trudy Jacoby, and Alan Michelson. The Standards Committee welcomes feedback from the ARLIS membership and encourages downloading the checklist and tailoring it for local use.

Marilyn Carbonell Appointed Head of Nelson-Atkins Library Services

The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art has announced that Marilyn Carbonell has been appointed the new head of library services beginning January 2006. Carbonell previously held positions at the University of Missouri Kansas City University Libraries, most recently as assistant director for collection development for 18 years.

Universal Photographic Digital Imaging Guidelines Available

The Universal Photographic Digital Imaging Guidelines (UPDIG) is available for download and use without charge at: http://www.updig.org. The UPDIG aim to clarify issues affecting accurate reproduction and management of digital image files. The guidelines have three primary goals: digital images look the same as they transfer between devices, platforms and vendors; digital images are prepared in the correct resolution, at the correct size, for the device(s) on which they will be viewed or printed; digital images have metadata embedded that conform to the IPTC (International Press Telecommunications Council) standards, making the images searchable, providing usage and contact information, and stating their creators or copyright owners.

Int'l Center of Photography & Eastman House Launch New Web Site

The prototype of PhotoMuse.org, the collaborative Web site of the International Center of Photography and the George Eastman House can be viewed at http://www.photomuse.org. The Web site includes information about collections, joint exhibitions, and educational programming. New features will be added in 2005 with a planned launch of the Web site in 2006.

Call for proposals for the 6th Annual Milka Bliznakov Prize for research that advances knowledge of women's contributions to architecture and related design fields. ARLIS/NA & VRA Set a Date

ARLIS/NA and VRA Executive Boards have approved the dates for the 2006 Summer Educational Institute for Visual Resources and Image Management. The 2006 Institute will take place from June 11-16, 2006 at Reed College in Portland Oregon. Registration dates will be announced this Fall.

Results of a 2003 survey of art libraries in Australia are available on the Web at http://www.nla.gov.au/initiatives/meetings/visarts/vasurv.html. The National Library of Australia conducted the survey with assistance from ARLIS/ANZ. Reports on the 2004 Visual Arts Forum held by the National Library to discuss the survey and means for improving access to visual arts resources in Australia are available at http://www.nla.gov.au/initiatives/meetings/visarts/vaindex.html.

ARLIS/NA Member Receives ARLIS/UK & Ireland International Delegate Award!

ARLIS/NA member Nedda Ahmed has been selected by ARLIS/UK & Ireland to receive the third Annual Conference International Delegate Award. Nedda will attend the 31st annual conference, Rough Diamonds: Polishing Partnerships with Creative Industries, to be held at Aston University, Birmingham, July 7-9, 2005. Congratulations Nedda!

Call for Participation in the Women Artists Archives National Directory (WAAND)

The Women Artists Archives National Directory (WAAND), the first digital directory of archives containing the papers of women artists active in the United States since World War II, is being compiled at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. All organizations holding primary source material about any woman visual artist active in the U.S. after 1945 are invited to be included in the new Web site directory being developed by Rutgers University Libraries. WAAND has been funded by the Getty Foundation, a program of the J. Paul Getty Trust. For more information about WAAND and how to participate, go to http://waand.rutgers.edu.

Design Online, a free full-text, full-color database of the magazine "Design," published by the Design Council from 1947 to 1994, is now available from AHDS. New Listserv for Students & New Librarians!

A new e-mail distribution list has been established for ARLIS/NA student members and those who are new (5 years or less) to the profession. The listserv will be used to discuss the needs of student members and to develop goals for student involvement in ARLIS/NA. It will also provide students with a forum for networking and raising questions about the art information professions and the Society. ARLIS/NA Members Honored

ARLIS/NA members Mary Wassermann and John Taormina were presented with the Nancy DeLaurier Award at the VRA annual conference in Miami last week. The Nancy DeLaurier Award, named for one of the pioneers of the profession, annually honors a visual resources professional for distinguished achievement in the field. "Achievement" is measured by immediate impact, and may take the form of published work, oral presentation, project management, software development, technology application, web-site use, or other outstanding effort. They were bestowed this award for developing and successfully implementing the first Joint ARLIS/NA and VRA Summer Educational Institute for Visual Resources and Image Management (SEI) which took place at Duke University in July, 2004.
