Gay & Lesbian Interests Roundtable (GLIRT) Business Meeting

Art Libraries Society of North America 29^th Annual Conference, Los Angeles, CA

William Peniston (The Newark Museum) called the GLIRT meeting to order at 9:10 am and introductions were made.  William explained that Bill Bunce wasn't in attendance because of personal reasons and sent his regrets.  Bill will be assisting with the program planning for St Louis and will moderate the meeting there.

Updates: 

1) Jim Viskochil (Cleveland Museum of Art) has moved the GLIRT website from the University of Pittsburgh to the Cleveland Museum website (http://library/cma-oh.org/glirt/).  There are still a few files that need to be updated and Jim will contact Ray Anne Lockard for assistance.

2) Eric Schwab (Cornell University) who manages GLIRT-L was not in attendance.  Favorable comments were made that GLIRT-L made discussion of program topics much easier and will be utilized again this year.

Conferences:

1) Los Angeles 2001.  Along with the Decorative Arts Round Table, the Diversity Committee, and the Architecture Section, we sponsored the opening plenary session, "Hollywood Design: Decadence, Glamour, Fantasy, Modernism and Opulence in 20th Century Southern California."  The tour of the Tom of Finland Foundation and the session, "Funny Papers: Comic Books and Graphic Novels in Library Collections," were not accepted by the program committee, but the "night cruise" conducted by the Museum of Neon Art was accepted.   The Saturday night tour was quite entertaining and there will be a second tour on Tuesday night.

2) St. Louis 2002.  The St Louis conference is a joint conference with VRA.  Suggested topics for programs include gay art on the internet and art and AIDS.  The group decided that gay art on the internet was too specific and may not appeal to the entire membership.  One option is to broaden this topic to art on the internet, but this is probably too broad.  There should be some other focus, such issues relating to rights and reproductions on the internet, leasing images on the internet, etc.  Discussion finally centered on access problems to image sites that are controversial in light of censorship and filtering.  The NINCH website has some information on this topic.  Hugh Wilburn said he would speak to Public Library group and Jim Viskochi said that he would speak to Museum Library group about possibly co-sponsoring a session on the topic of censorship on the internet.

3) Baltimore 2003.  There is only one possible topic - John Waters !!!  Still have time to explore various other possibilities.

4) New York City 2004.

Elections:

Bill Bunce spoke to Edith Crowe (San Jose State University) and William spoke to Stephen Patrick (East Tennessee State University).  Both had indicated willingness to serve.   Edith declined the nomination, citing extensive workload.  Stephen agreed to serve.   Stephen Patrick was elected by acclamation.

Other Business:

Thanks were given to Ken Correa for the Los Angeles Tours.

Thanks were given to William Peniston for serving as chair.

Cudos were given to the fabulous plenary session.

Announcements:

Roberto Ferrari invited anyone who is interested to attend the ARLIS/Southeast meeting on November 8-11 in Boca Raton/Fort Lauderdale.  He outlined the tentative events.

Hugh Wilburn invited members to attend the IFLA Pre-Conference sponsored by ARLIS/New England to be held in Boston on August 16-17.  The focus of this conference will be on the changing nature of image research.

Daniel Starr, incoming ARLIS/NA Vice-President, will be our Board Liaison.
